Should Christians Use Social Media to Share the Gospel?
In today’s digital age, social media has become one of the most powerful tools of communication. For the believer in Christ, the question arises: Should Christians use social media to share the Gospel?
The short and resounding answer is yes—but with discernment, wisdom, and above all, love.
Posting vs. Engaging
When we consider using social media, we should understand the difference between posting and engaging. Posting is simply sharing truth—Scripture, encouragement, or a testimony—without expecting dialogue or confrontation. Engaging, however, involves entering into conversations, answering questions, or addressing opposing views.
Scripture encourages both declaring truth and interacting with people, but it also gives us clear instruction on how we are to go about it.
Contending vs. Striving
In Jude 1:3, we read:
"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
The word contend here is translated from the Greek word ἐπαγωνίζομαι (epagōnizomai), which means “to struggle for” or “to fight earnestly.” It implies a passionate defense of the truth of the Gospel, not through violence or argument, but through faithfulness and bold proclamation.
Contrast this with 2 Timothy 2:23–26:
"But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient..."
The word strive comes from the Greek μάχομαι (machomai), meaning “to quarrel, dispute, or engage in battles.” This striving is argumentative and unproductive, often arising from pride rather than love.
So, while we are called to contend for the faith—present and defend the truth—we are also warned not to strive—engage in heated, unloving arguments that lead only to division.
The Right Way to Share
2 Timothy continues:
"In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth..." (v. 25)
This is the posture of the Gospel messenger: meekness, patience, gentleness, and a hope that God Himself will move on the hearts of those we reach.
Whether posting a verse, a personal testimony, or answering a question, we must remember our tone and motive: are we trying to win a debate, or win a soul?
Guidelines for Gospel Sharing Online
-
Yes, Share Boldly. Use your platform—be it Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or anywhere else—to declare the Gospel. Scripture, testimonies, links to sound sermons or resources, even videos of your own message are all ways to spread the good news. Don’t hide your light (Matthew 5:14-16).
-
Avoid Arguments. Do not respond to posts or comments that are made to provoke, attack, or insult—whether they target Christians or other faiths. Paul warns us in 2 Timothy 2:23 to avoid “foolish and unlearned questions,” because they only create strife.
-
Respond with Scripture, Not Opinion. God’s Word is living and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). It is not our clever words that change hearts, but the truth of Scripture planted like a seed.
-
Show Love, Not Just Logic. Sharing truth in love, not to "make a point" but to share hope, is the true heart of evangelism. People can sense when your motive is to correct them versus when it’s to love them.
-
Remember: God Gives the Increase. As Paul said:
"Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed... I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase... So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." (1 Corinthians 3:5–7)
Our role is to plant and water—faithfully, gently, and lovingly. God handles the rest.
Always Include the Gospel
Every post or conversation should point to the central message of salvation:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23)
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9)
Will You Receive Christ Today?
If you’ve never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, the invitation is open:
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13)
Right now, wherever you are, you can pray in your heart:
“Lord Jesus, I know I’m a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I ask You to forgive me, come into my heart, and be my Savior. I trust You alone for my salvation. Amen.”
Let your posts be seeds, your comments be water, and your heart be a vessel of Christ’s love. Use social media boldly—but wisely—to spread the Gospel, not debates. Truth, not pride. Love, not strife.
And always remember: the power is not in the post, but in the God who gives the increase. 🌱
